There have been many versions of this FAD diet circulating for years. A few books have documented different variations of this simple, anonymously written diet plan, which surprisingly has been a popular go-to diet for quick anti-bloat and quick weight loss.
There is no individualization in regards to The Cabbage Soup Diet - it seems to be a one diet fits man or woman.... There are no recommendations about exercise, no behavioral tips, no advice on changing bad habits -- just a strict list of what to eat each day of the week. Meals need to be eaten at home, or prepared ahead of time and taken with you as for the most part these foods won't be found on your favorite restaurant menus.
The Cabbage Soup Diet plan promises a 10-pound weight loss in one week, and dieters are restricted to one week at a time on the plan. If they want to lose more, they are advised to wait awhile before starting another week on this super-low-calorie diet.
- 6 large green onions
- 2 green peppers, finely chopped
- 1 or 2 cans of tomatoes (diced or whole)
- 3 Carrots, sliced thin bite size
- 1 Container (10 oz. or so) Mushrooms
- 1 bunch of celery , slice thin bite size
- half a head of cabbage , take darker outer leaves off, chop into bite size pieces
- 1 package Lipton soup mix
- 1 or 2 cubes of bouillon (beef -or- chicken, optional)
- 1 48oz can V8 juice (optional)
- Season to taste with salt, pepper, parsley, curry, garlic powder, etc.
Directions:
Slice green onions, put in a pot and start to saute with a little cooking spray. Once green onion a little soft add chopped green pepper, carrots, cabbage and celery.
Slice mushrooms into thick slices, add to pot. (I do not like mushrooms so I skipped)
If you would like a spicy soup, add a small amount of curry or cayenne pepper now. Go slow - I added about 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper.
You can use beef or chicken bouillon cubes for seasonings. I added a chicken bullion for a little extra flavor and saltiness..
Use about 12 cups of water (or 8 cups and the V8 juice), cover and put heat on low. Let soup cook for a long time - two hours works well. Season to taste with salt and pepper. I used the V8 juice, as it has a mix of a bunch of veggies and seasonings, I thought it would add more flavor.
Basic Cabbage Soup Diet plan:
Day 1: Cabbage soup and all the fruit you want except bananas. Drink unsweetened tea, black coffee, cranberry juice, or water.
Day 2: Cabbage soup, all the low-calorie vegetables you want (except beans, peas, or corn), and a baked potato with butter.
Day 3: Cabbage soup and a mixture of the above fruit and vegetables.
Day 4: Cabbage soup, up to eight bananas, and two glasses of skim milk.
Day 5: Cabbage soup, up to 20 ounces of beef, chicken or fish, up to six fresh tomatoes, and at least 6-8 glasses of water.
Day 6: Cabbage soup, up to 3 beef steaks, and unlimited vegetables.
Day 7: Cabbage soup, up to 2 cups of brown rice, unsweetened fruit juices, and unlimited vegetables.
This is a FAD diet and is set up to be low calories. Most likely there will be the initial water weight for those of you that have tried this in the past and as the diet states it's for 7 days only. We will see how it goes...I just know, I like cabbage - but the smell of the Cabbage Soup is a little much - I have no idea how I will last the week....I made a double batch...hopefully no need to make more.....I am hoping the smell of Cabbage Soup is out of my house by the end of this week!!!
