You may or may not of heard of the possible demise of Twinkies. That popular snack food of most of our youth (except they screwed around with the cream in recent years and it's no longer provides that grainy sugar rush)...With the recent coverage about Twinkies being gone...it never occured to me that also Ring Dings, Funny Bones, Mini Powdered Donuts and Devil Dogs (among other products) fall into the same catagory. Hostess & Drakes are all under the Interstate Bakeries umbrella. When the realization hit (last night) - I ran out to the grocery store thinking I could stock up and freeze some, until some sort of agreement was made or a company bought the rights to keep producing them.
I went to two grocery stores (Stop & Shop) all they had left was one lonely bag of mini donuts and a box of bluberry muffins...I grabbed the donuts and left the muffins. Then headed over to Shop Rite all that remained was one box of Ring Dings (I grabbed it) about 6 boxes of blueberry muffins (if they do come back - they might want to drop these) and about 15 holiday fruit cakes (these aren't looking too popular either - does anybody actually eat these???)... but not a Twinkie anywhere :0(
I was not about to drive to any other locations. I like a snack cake once in a while (I much prefer homemade) and in a pinch they are good. But really, I am trying to keep on the healthy side of things and having these in the house is not a good idea.
Hubby tucked into about 6 mini donuts this morning for breakfast and I ate one (1 of 2 pack)frozen Ring Ding for breakfast. This is why this stuff should not be in house and pretty much every diet out there tells you to clean your cupboards and get rid of the junk so there are no temptations!!! The downside of this is if there are no Twinkies - how can anyone do the Twinkie Diet??? Good thing I got that diet in! Plus, a Ring Ding for breakfast is not the right way to start the day.
On the plus side, there are negotiations presently being worked on to buy out the bankrupt company and Twinkies (and other delicious cakes) may still have a life left to them. It might just take a couple of months to get production going again.
For all of you that were able to stock up on your favorites...GOOD FOR YOU (Just don't eat them too quickly!!!) and if you do have to have some - do it in moderation by working it into a healthy diet. A little treat is better than no treat and may help keep you satisfied!!!
