I love to shop. Whether I am big or small(er). For the last 5 years I have bought clothes in my current size and smaller (because this year I am going to do it.....every year for the 5+ years I was going to do it).
When I was younger, I used to shop for fun and the hunt. The planning what mall or boutique stores I was going to visit, the rummaging through racks, searching for the right size at the right price, finding something that hits all my "must have criteria" and trying all on to find the majority of the 6 piece limit allowed to bring in, only one item meets all actual "must haves"... in addition to telling "G" what time I would be home would be well within a normal shopping day....he of course has gotten used to whatever time I tell him - he adds two hours, sort of like when he tells me the football game only has 15 minutes on the clock.
This was all before I became fat.
Shopping for plus sized clothing, is a nightmare times 1,000.
But to clarify, bathing suits are a whole different story. I know I am not alone in this. Bathing suits are a nightmare no matter what size you are (exception of models that are a size 2).
First I'd like to start with pet peeves - why does everything you read tell you horizontal stripes should not be worn if you are plus sized? It's obvious they are going to make you look even bigger than you already are and who needs that? But...then when you go shopping the plus sized section has horizontal striped shirts everywhere? That or large frickin' flowers so that no matter how hard you try to blend in you still look like a bad bedspread.
Why is it that if you are petite the price of pants is $5.00 less than Misses and Plus sized is $5.00 more. If they are saving on making the smaller pant size for petites and Misses is regular price - why do I have to spend $5.00 more for the material they have already saved on the petite sized pants? Why not charge the same price no matter what the size?
Why is it no matter where you try on clothes from Macy's down to Target the floors of dressing rooms are disgusting? Most have stains (from what I do not know) as most stores ask that you not bring food or drink into the store. Also, staples. How do staples get on the floor in a dressing room? How sucky is it to take your shoes off and step where who knows who feet have been onto a staple? WTF, where did that come from, so while your fat ass is hobbling (because the room you picked out doesn't have a chair/seat, built in slab of wood (to look like a seat) you are now digging out a staple from your foot all while mashing your other foot into god knows what on the floor......OH, OH, OH why do woman feel it's okay to change a stinky diaper and leave it in the fitting room once they are done!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
G.R.O.S.S. - I do not have kids and I do not want to have to smell your kids crap in a diaper on my leisurely day of shopping....take it with you!!!!!
Getting back to where peoples feet have been - take a look around and observe the people that are shopping where you shop. If you are in Walmart, many missing teeth. Don't get me wrong I like Walmart (great bargains) but if you are not replacing missing teeth, or washing the stains out of your clothing or looking in the mirror before you leave the house, good chance you aren't washing the foot fungus off your feet either. If you need examples on what you find in Walmart you need this site for reference. http://www.peopleofwalmart.com/
Catalog shopping takes away some of the "disgusting" of trying on clothes in the store....I mostly shop at stores and just buy, take home try on & return what I don't like. At least if my feet are going to get dirty it's in my own house from my own dirt.
Most Plus Sized woman know Macy's, Target, Kohl's and Lane Bryant are main stays for finding plus sized clothing.
I for one replace shirts alot. Let me say it again ALOT. It seems that my chest is a tray and everything falls on it...it gets stained and there you go, another working in the yard or painting shirt....I am not a slob. If I were flat chested food would be kind enough to fall out of my mouth onto the nicely placed napkin in my lap.
Boston Proper http://www.bostonproper.com/ Has gorgeous clothing - nothing over a size 14 though. I have found I can find most items either identical or very similar at Steinmart....one of my favorite places to shop. I only put this in here as a reference for Steinmart...I have not purchased anything from them...but they do have gorgeous clothes....
Steinmarthas a website, but you can't buy anything from it. If you do not have one by you - scope it out while on vacation or in a nearby town. They have a decent sized Plus Size section. Prices are fair and styles are current. They also carry mens, jewelry, home accents and shoes. They also have AWESOME SALES!!!!!
Spiegel http://www.spiegel.com/ Another fave of mine. They carry sizes from 2/4 and up. Not real high on the Plus Sizes though, but you can find decent things in their catalog....I love their shoes....
The Avenue http://www.avenue.com/ Their site is okay. Their store is better....I do not have large (enough) thighs to wear their pants (same with Lane Bryant). So if you have larger thighs - this is the place for pants for you. I find them to be a little higher priced than Steinmart, but this store caters to the 14 and up sizes. Most up to date styles...and they are one of the ones that carry the horizontal stripes....Go Figure??!!
Soft Surroundings http://www.softsurroundings.com/ Nice clothes, I actually prefer Soft Surroundings over Cold Water Creek (a little more stylish)...but they are a little pricey. Good thing is you can read reviews before you buy and it helps to narrow down if you are interested in a particular item. I have purchased alot through their catalog (no stores in NE area) and have been very happy. Returns take a little longer than most catalogs to process...be patient, their customer service is very good. I have actually found alot of items you see in catalog on EBAY (new with tags) at 1/2 price or lower....
Coldwater Creek http://www.coldwatercreek.com/ Another nice but pricier catalog. Geared toward 50+ older woman, some basic items you can pick up at fair prices and usually have good discount codes.
Silhouettes http://www.silhouettes.com/ Another nice but pricier catalog.
If you are more Preppy.....
Lands End http://www.landsend.com/, Eddie Bauer http://www.eddiebauer.com/home.jsp and L.L. Bean http://www.llbean.com/carry a nice selection. All have pretty decent return policies if you shop on-line.
If you need someting special .......You can always have things custom made. Just find yourself a good tailor, ask around you might be surprised by how many people do use tailors!
Check Naughty Codes http://www.naughtycodes.com/ Before making a final purchase on-line....they have alot of current discount codes out there that can help!!
Shoes, handbags, misc chotchkas are not included in here or I would still be typing.
