We have all seen those little round disc's of cardboard like cakes in the cookie -or- chip aisle...and believe it or not, there is a diet based around them.
The Rice Cake Diet is for those that find portion control challenging. It’s very easy, inexpensive, and flexible. First thought when I saw the name and the amount of Rice Cakes to be eaten daily – I’LL STARVE!!!!
This seemed more like a FAD diet before I read a bit more of it and it does have some good points.
The basics of this diet is to eat SIX - 40 calories Rice Cakes per day. It’s not the amount of Rice Cakes you are allowed, it comes down to using them as a guide to what you eat per day. The idea is that you never eat anything that doesn’t fit on the cake. You can make an exception for vegetables, salad and soup, but if you add meat to a salad it should be less than what will fit on the 4″ cake.
It is recommended that all white flour and sugar be eliminated while following this plan.
Sample Day
Breakfast: One fried egg on the cake and have a small, non-fat yogurt with it.
Morning Snack: One cake with a little drizzle of honey and a few almonds.
Lunch: One cake with a bowl of vegetable soup.
Afternoon Snack: One rice cake with a slice of low-fat cheese and a piece of fruit.
Dinner: A piece of chicken/fish/meat that’s measurement would fit on one rice cake and a tossed salad.
Evening Snack: One cake with salsa.
As far as daily exercise, it is recommended to get in least 30 minutes a day to keep your caloric requirement high, prevent your metabolism from slowing down, and avoid losing muscle along with fat.
Rice Cakes come in many flavors, Carmel, Popcorn, Ranch, etc…(some of which you would not put anything additional on) but if you stay within the 40 calorie per cake, your toppings could be endless. The Rice Cake is convenient as you can find them anywhere, easy to pack for all meals and an easy glance at one of those 4” discs it’s an easy measurement tool, no need to pull out the food scale to weight your food allotment.
